As we approach 谷雨 (gu yu) or “grain rain” and move towards the end of springtime on the Chinese Solar Calendar, it is important to maintain the liver practice in qigong. This not only keeps the liver healthy, but also prepares for the next season by nourishing the fire (heart) energy through the Five Elements Creation Cycle. This qigong set has been used for the prevention and treatment of liver and gall bladder disorders throughout China, and is characterized by slower movements with deep, long abdominal breathing.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine the main function of the liver is to regulate the movement or flow of blood and qi throughout the entire body. Therefore, imbalances in liver energy can manifest as issues in any of the organ systems. In particular, the liver and gall-bladder work together to support spleen and lung health, which can in turn affect the efficiency of any immune response. They also have a theoretical connection with the tendons and work to nourish and strengthen them, which in turn allows for the development of stronger and healthier muscles. Eye health is also closely related to liver function and TCM theory states that the eyes are nourished by the liver blood. So any deficiency or imbalance can present as problems with the eye. Conversely, taking care to maintain the wood energy associated with the liver and gall-bladder, can assist in treating various eye issues, including myopia, blurred vision and bloodshot and/or painful eyes.
