Nine Dragon Baguazhang 九龍八卦 掌 AKA Jiulong Baguazhang has eight special palms. The one illustrated here is thunder palm. Our thunder palm is known as Bao Zhang 抱掌. However in the Li family style it is also called Zhen Zhang 震掌. Bao means to embrace or hug something with the arms. This is the classical name of this palm in many other styles of Baguazhang. We call it Bao Zhang when used to hook, catch, clutch or embrace with the arms or inside surface of the palm. When using the outer surface of the palm and arm we call it Zhen or thunder which literally translates as to shake or jolt violently to shock something as in an explosion or loud booming sound. Bao Zhang is very yin while Zhen Zhang is quite yang. This video is a small part of a lesson taught to our instructors on Bao and Zhen of thunder palm from Nine Dragon Baguazhang against common strikes from Boxers and Karate practitioners.
