Liu Hung Chieh was a renowned Taoist master and lineage holder in tai chi, hsing-i, bagua, as well as Taoist qigong and meditation practices. He lived and studied with the founder of Wu style tai chi, Wu Jien Chuan, and was the youngest member of the original Beijing Bagua Chang School.
At a young age of 30, Liu was declared enlightened by the Tien Tai School of Buddhism, after which he spent ten years studying with Taoists in the mountains of Western China. He was an adept in the Taoist rejuvenation techniques, enabling him to maintain a youthful vitality even in his 80s when he took on Bruce Frantzis as a student.
Liu was a private and reclusive figure, teaching virtually no one except for Frantzis and Frantzis’ teacher Bai Hua after the Chinese revolution in 1949. Despite his small stature, Liu possessed immense internal energy and martial skills, able to easily overpower the much larger and younger Frantzis during their first meeting.
Under Liu’s tutelage for three years in Beijing, Frantzis gained deep insights into the Taoist energy arts and meditation practices. Liu’s profound teachings and embodiment of the Taoist way had a profound impact on Frantzis, shaping his approach to disseminating these ancient practices to the West.
