Li’s students eventually became personal bodyguards for Mao, Chiang Kai-shek, & Henry Pu-Yi.

Although not due to malicious intent, Li had allegedly killed many people throughout his life in both martial arts matches & self-defense altercations, causing his victims’ relatives to hold some serious grudges, one of whom ultimately killed Li by poisoning his tea.

In 1931, at the invitation of Li Jinglin (李景林; 1885-1931), Liu accompanied Li in relocating to the Shandong Martial Arts Institute (山東國術館), where Li was appointed as a head instructor.

While living in Huangxian County, Shandong, the martial artist Zhang Xiangwu (张骧伍) asked Li to help him correct his Kunwu Sword. Liu then studied under Zhang as well & learned his Yang-style Taiji Boxing, Wudang Sword, Qingping Sword, & Kunwu Sword. At the end of 1931, after Li Jinglin passed away, Master Li requested that Liu continue learning from Zhang. Liu spent over two years with him, during which time he also learned Six Harmonies Praying Mantis Boxing from the famous local martial artist Ding Zicheng (丁子成).
