Learn specific stepping and footwork used in Sun Style Tai Chi, called the follow step. Sun Style Tai Chi uses a higher tai chi stance with narrower steps and a follow step. This helps with developing good balance skills because we spend more time in a single leg stance in Sun Style Tai Chi. The follow step allows us to have a kickstand of sorts that acts as an insurance plan if we have a perturbance of balance, or we loose our balance. It also allows us to quickly change the function of that leg for tai chi kicks, or stepping in a different direction. Because of the Sun Style Tai Chi higher stance, it is more suitable for Tai Chi for seniors, tai chi for beginners and helps to develop great balance skills while remaining safe. Sun Style Tai Chi develops good posture, hip alignment and weight shift, which helps promote lower leg strength, body awareness and proprioception. Remember, Kung fu, simply means a focused practice to develop a high level of skill. And Sun Style Tai Chi is among the martial arts, so each movement has a martial art application, including the stepping. If you are double weighted, then you can not protect and change your stance. The follow step allows you to be lithe at any age. If you study taiji, tai chi churn, qigong, chi king, or simply body mechanics, learning the Sun Style Tai Chi walking or stepping, will develop your mobility skills, your posture and improve balance.
