Hsing I Chuan Santi Shi – the Purpose of the Posture

The basic stance in Hsing I Chuan is Santi Shi also known as the Trinity Stance. A major goal of the standing training for his posture is to build your Kidney Chi. This Posture is the Metal Element in Five Element Theory. Metal is the Mother of Water in the creation cycle a Five Element Theory. The water element is the kidneys. When the kidneys are strong, the bones and teeth are strong. The hearing is keen. The lower back is not sore and neither are the knees. The abundant water calms the Fire Element which is the mind. This is the Alchemy of the Posture. The Lung Meridian runs from the shoulder nest down to the inside of the thumb at the nail bed and the large intestine Meridian runs through the index finger and back up the arm towards the head. The Lung and the Large Intestine are the Zang and Fu organs of the metal element. This is a Yin and Yang pairing of solid and hollow organs. We spread the thumb wide and extend the index finger to help open these meridians. We gaze through the index finger to stimulate the flow of energy. Often times new students will ask why one teachers Posture is one way and another teacher’s is another way. Generally there there are degrees of right and wrong depending on ones vantage point. I observed people whose torsos were square or perpendicular to their target. When the angle in the shoulder nest is two acute, then the energy is not smooth through the shoulder joint and through the meridians in the arm. The result of this is that if someone attempts to clear your arm from the side the posture crumbles when that angle is too acute. my teacher used to say “don’t believe me test it yourself”. When your posture crumbles you have simply lost the wedge that is Hsing I Chuan.
