扣 kòu is a hooking movement used in Xing Yi Quan. It really means “to button” like hooking a loop over a button on a Chinese style jacket. So it’s not just a simple turning away movement. Here Laoshi Paul Andrews shows how to use kou to deflect but gain position to press/push/strike into the centre simultaneously.

This movement can be used with a single hand version of push hands, training without strength but using structure. If too much pressure is applied it becomes easy to fold or manipulate the unnecessary force.

The kou movement is found at the beginning of Xing Yi Academy’s Pi Quan Form.
